There isn’t a position in the NFL that has been more affected by the new NFL rule changes than safety. Today’s safeties have to be extremely careful not to draw a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty. Safeties today can’t strike fear into receivers as they have in the past. Gone are the days of the head hunter in the NFL.

One thing that will never change is the need for safeties to react quickly and be “ball hawks.” Many past players on this list were feared and vicious hitters. All of the players on this list were play makers, who had a nose for the football.

These players manned the middle of the field, were versatile and were the last line of defense. Safeties are asked to do it all for their teams. From being the 8th man in the box, making open field tackles and defending against the deep threat. Here are some of the best who ever played.
