The current crop of tight ends contain a freakish combination of speed, strength and coordination. Tight ends have always been one of the most versatile positions in football. Recently, tight ends have been used more and more effectively in today’s offenses.

Many of the current superstar tight ends playing in the NFL were previously basketball players in college. Julian Thomas and Antonio Gates didn’t even play college football. Jimmy Graham played only one year after four seasons of basketball. Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates both made it to the Sweet Sixteen with their respective teams.

Recently there has been a lot of talk about if whether Tony Gonzalez is the greatest tight ends of all time. I’m trying to rank the constantly changing position of tight end throughout the history of the NFL. Taking into account the inflated passing numbers of recent times, blocking ability, stats for their time and how they influenced the game.
